3 Idiots (Movie Review)

Title of the movie: 3 Idiots
Release Date: 25 Dec. 2009
Genre: Comedy
Language: Hindi
Theme: Importance of self-actualization
3 Idiots is a 2009 Indian comedy-drama film directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. It was loosely adapted from the novel ‘Five Point Someone’ by Chetan Bhagat. 3 Idiot stars Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and many others. 3 Idiots is a comedy of ideas that is as provocative as funny, as wildly entertaining as insightful. The atmospheric setting of an Engineering College and its environment clearly mirrors all these characteristics.
The film begins with two friends (Madhavan and Sharman) embarking on a quest for a lost buddy. On this journey, they encounter a long forgotten bet, a wedding they must crash and a funeral that goes impossibly out of control. As they make their way through the perilous landscape, another journey begins: their inner journey through memory lane and the story of their friend, the irrepressible free thinker Rancho (Aamir Khan), who in his own way touched and changed their lives. It’s a story of their hostel days that swings between Rancho’s romance with the spirited Piya (Kareena Kapoor) and his clash with an oppressive mentor. And then one day suddenly Rancho vanishes. Who was he? Where did he come from? Why did he leave? The friend who influenced and inspired them to think creatively and independently, even as the conformist world called them three idiots. Where is the original idiot now? Finally in the misty mountains of unparallel beauty, the friends find the key to the secret.
Rancho can be described as a free thinker with positive and humorous attitude who believes in simplicity. Madhavan and Sharman have been represented as the ones who were forced to go towards other destination despite of their dislike, leaving their own field of interest behind. Likewise, Piya displays impatience and lack of proper decision. They irritate and make fun of many others, but the viewers can still empathize with these characters. In fact, it is the main reason why I think this movie is so brilliant. It rings with truth. Moreover, the reasons for their actions are crystal clear.
The main part of the movie relies on the narrator R. Madhavan, an idiot among those three. I think that it is a useful device which holds the complex plot together. The movie has excellently represented the fact that we must run after ability rather than success because success follows ability. Likewise, the need of self-actualization, freedom to life, simplicity in living, etc. have been remarkably presented. I’m impressed by the gripping blend of various truths and living styles in this movie.
Nevertheless, I persevered and, all in all, I can highly recommend 3 Idiots. I challenge you to remain uninfluenced after watching this exceptional movie.
