Lesson-1 Introduction to Astrology (Astrology Lessons for the Beginners)

What is Astrology?

From immemorial times, watching the heavens has provided inspiration for mankind. Astrology is perhaps the most ancient arcane system of cosmic wisdom that links all life, creation, the universe and man.
Astronomy and astrology are intertwined; call them the twin sisters acknowledged by our ancient ancestors. Astronomy provides the foundation and structure from which astrology springs.
There is a hung jury when we try to define astrology. Many say it is an art of divination. Others insist that it is only pure science. And the controversy goes on unresolved without offering a definitive answer.
We argue that it is both a science and an art. The scientific portion of astrology comes into play as we work with the astronomical, mathematical, and geometrical methods. Astrology is based on observation and correlation both in a scientific and divinatory manner. The ancients watched the sky, observing the movements of planets and other heavenly objects, recorded them and were then able to make quite accurate predictions as to their future appearances. That's science at work.
They also began to observe when specific heavenly orbs in certain positions would correspond to changes in weather or events in their lives. This 'omen' divination was the earliest use of astrology.
So in a nutshell, astrology is the oldest system of a universal wisdom for self-knowledge and awareness as well as divination using natural phenomenon.

Principle of Astrology or Jyotish

Planets in sky keep on revolving around the Sun continuously & during their movement they keep on acquiring different positions. Thousands of years ago sages in India discovered through their sixth sense that there exist a relationship between the position of planets at the time of birth of a person & various events that happen in his life as well as his/her personality traits. Indian Vedic Astrology is called 'Jyotish' in Hindi language which has been derived from the word 'Jyoti'. 'Jyoti' means Light. 'Jyotish' means to throw upon light on a person's life.

What is Vedic Indian/Hindu Astrology?

Vedic Astrology refers to Indian or Hindu astrology, a system that originated in ancient India and which was documented by sages in the Vedic scriptures. Also known as "Jyotish"—the science of light—Vedic astrology deals with astral light patterns that are thought to determine our destiny.

Basic Principle of Vedic Astrology

The basic premise of this astrology is that all things are linked. Your karma or fortune is determined by a predestined cosmic design. You are a soul incarnating in a body at a very specific time and place, and your life is a reflection of the greater whole into which you are born, just as flowers bloom at certain times, when all conditions are perfectly congenial. So is the case with our births on this planet, according to the theory of karma.

Various issues of life & Astrology

Various issues regarding a person's life like profession (job / business), education, marriage, married life, child birth, property, foreign tour, health, disputes, financial condition can be ascertained / estimated by calculating planetary positions at the time of his birth by some astronomical equations. We need birth details (Date of Birth, Month of Birth, Year of Birth, Time of Birth & Place of birth) of the person concerned for calculating planetary positions at the time of his birth.

Use of Astrology

If a person is struggling regarding some particular issue of life (viz. education, job, business, career growth, marriage, married life, childbirth, financial condition, foreign tour, health, constructing property / house) from a long interval of time & even after trying hard, is unable to achieve his goal due to variuos obstructions in his way, then slowly & slowly he starts losing hope & starts feeling disappointed (a man is after all a man). In such a case some people also take some wrong steps in life like running away from home or committing suicide. In such a case by analyzing his horoscope / birth chart we can tell the person concerned from how much time he has been struggling & when the struggle would come to an end. Also how much he can achieve relating to that particular issue in life.

Misconception regarding Astrology

Some people have a misconception regarding Jyotish that it is the rays emanating from the planets that affect our lives or have some concern with our destiny but that is a myth. Rays can only produce some physical effect. Just like Sun rays produce heat & give away light. Similarly rays emanating from Moon on a Full-Moon day are responsible for producing tides in the sea. They have no concern with our destiny.

It is not the rays but the planetary positions at the time of a birth of a person as seen from his birth place which have some correlation with the person's personality as well as his destiny regarding various issues of his/her life. The theory given by some so called astrologers that if we wear gemstones related to some planets then the rays coming from those planets will penetrate those gemstones and will enter our skin and will alter our destiny is not correct. It has been observed that gemstones produce some effects on the state of mind or in some cases state of health of a person.

Parts of Astrology

Indian Vedic Astrology can be broadly divided into two parts: -

Calculation Part or Ganit Jyotish in Indian Vedic Astrology

In this part, birth details of a person: - date of birth, month of birth, year of birth, time of birth a.m./p.m., place of birth (village / city, district, state & country) are gathered and then position of planets at the time of birth of the person is calculated using some astronomical calculations. A 'panchang' or Ephemeris was used for this purpose earlier but nowadays many computer softwares on Indian Astrology are available to do this job & moreover with out any effort & with in no time. A horoscope is generated after calculations which consists of Lagna Kundli (Birth Chart), Chandra Kundli (Moon Chart), Navamansh Kundli & other divisional charts as well as tables consisiting details of Vinshottari Mahadasha-Antardasha-Pratyantardasha, Yogini Dashas and Ashtottari dashas.

Predictive Astrology (Phalit Jyotish)

In Predictive Astrology or Phalit Jyotish, by analysing the horoscope of the person concerned an Indian Vedic Astrologer tries to ascertain a person's life or luck from various point of views like education, job, career prospects, business, financial condition, property, marriage, married life, childbirth, foreign tour & health etc. Analysis from the point of view of married life & child birth, horoscope of the spouse is also required. Also past as well as present years of life are analyzed & than future is told. A good future-teller (or foreteller or soothsayer or astrologer or jyotishi) is a person who is also a good past-teller as well as a good present-teller.

Concept of Relative Motion in Indian Vedic Astrology

In Indian Vedic Astrology we have to work according to the concept of relative motion & Earth is assumed to be stationary. While Sun & Moon are considered to be planets. Also two imaginary planets 'Rahu' (Dragon's Head) & 'Ketu' (Dragon's Tail) are taken into consideration. These two imaginary planets are actually two points on which the Moon's orbit & Earth's Equator (extended into the space) intersects. Other planets are Mars (Mangal), Mercury (Budh), Jupiter (Guru), Venus (Shukra), Saturn (Shani). Newly discovered planets like Uranus, Neptune, Pluto etc. are not taken into consideration.
